How I do Research for these Reports
Also some sad personal news
Hello and Welcome, I’m your Code Monkey!
Sadly my dog Tico passed away yesterday, he was 15 years old. He was an excellent dog, loved people, very kind and calm, loved to go on walks, and for some reason LOVED banana. It was only 3.5 years ago that I adopted him (and his sister), I definitely wish I had more time with him but at least I am happy to have been able to give him a loving home in the final years of his life.
It all happened so suddenly. Friday 10am I went on a walk and he was perfectly fine, then Friday 3pm he vomited and had bloody diarrhea. I took him to the Vet Hospital, they did some tests and he only had a slight fever and some elevated levels, since he wasn't eating or drinking he stayed there overnight. Then sadly Saturday 9am I get the call that he suddenly passed away, his heart just stopped.
Let this be a reminder to you to go give a big hug to your loved ones, whether they be dogs, cats, or humans.
So this is a shorter Game Dev Report since I'm not in the correct headspace to write, thank you.
Game Dev: How I Research

How I do Research for these Reports

The main source is just randomly stumbling upon something interesting while watching YouTube. I watch a lot of game dev/programming content, usually have YouTube open on the second monitor while doing various tasks that don't require deep focus.
Some great channels I watch:
Game Marker's Toolkit, execellently produced videos on Game Design
BiteMeGames, lots of interesting Game Dev videos and devlogs
git-amend, excellent very niche videos on topics no one else covers
Fireship, great for general tech news
ThePrimeagen, interesting tech/programming commentary
gameranx, general gaming news and reviews
Then two great newsletters that I read every time are GameDiscoverCo, for info on how Steam and the industry as a whole is changing; and How To Market a Game, for excellent articles on Steam discoverability. (watch the videos I did with Chris)
Next I check various blogs
Unity Blog, official articles, some of them are quite interesting
GameDeveloper.com, interesting analysis, articles and interviews
GamesIndustry.biz, industry business news and financials
Hacker News, tons of articles every single day, some are very niche
And then I check the subreddits r/gamedev, which has lots of analysis and post mortems straight from developers themselves; and r/Unity3D for more Unity specific stuff, mainly fun looking showcases.
![]() | I go through all of those, either throughout the week or on Saturday and then I pick 4 interesting things to write about and publish on Sunday. It's been almost a year since I started this newsletter, I hope you have found it a very interesting and informative addition to your weekly schedule! Thanks for reading! |
